Tip: For slight ageing, mix with a little water. For extreme ageing, add pieces of torn tissue to the freshly applied latex while it is still wet.

A professional impression material for production of negatives with exact details. Scalp hair must be covered by a bald cap, eyelashes and body hair should be lightly covered with make-up remover. For making a facial impression, about 250 g of Alginate DE is mixed with cold water. Stir by hand quickly and vigorously, until a creamy mass is produced. The material allows a working window of around 5 minutes for mixing and taking the impression. Use both hands to apply Alginate DE, in such a way that approximately an equal amount is always being applied at any one time on both sides. Be sure not to apply Alginate DE in such a way as to close the model’s nostrils. After the mixed Alginate DE has been completely applied, it must then be reinforced with plaster bandages. As soon as the plaster has set, carefully remove the Alginate impression from the skin, and then immediately fill it with plaster. This produces the final positive. After the positive has completely hardened throughout, remove the Alginate negative and dispose of it properly. It cannot be used again.

The light version can be used for simulation of fresh wounds, since it retains its shine when dry, allowing the simulated wound to still look fresh. A cult favourite in the special effects makeup industry, Glatzan L is a liquid synthetic material for creation of ultra-thin bald caps. In a well-ventilated room, Glatzan is thinly and uniformly applied by brush to a head form and allowed to dry. After the surface has dried, this procedure should be repeated at least three times, in order to reach the required material thickness. The outer borders of the cap, however, should consist of only 1 or 2 layers, to provide an especially thin edge for fine transitions. After application of the last layer, the bald cap should be allowed to thoroughly dry all the way through (for 6-12 hours). It can then be thoroughly powdered and carefully removed from the head form. The removal process should start at the nape of the neck and then proceed slowly in the direction of the forehead. Bald caps created in this way should be used only after the fumes have completely dispersed, and after there is no greatly noticeable smell of solvent.
